Artist Statement

In 2002, following a life altering event, Vernie Croghan walked away from a successful business career to fulfill a forever and a day dream; to work in the world of art. Without haste, Croghan enrolled at Metrolpolitan State University of Denver to pursue her passion.

In 2006, and two weeks before graduation, Croghan faced another hurdle, she was diagnosed with brain cancer, and underwent emergency surgery. Undeterred, a week after surgery, and with the aid of family, friends and the University faculty, she proudly walked across the auditorium stage to receive her B. F.A. degree in Design Communications.

While working as a freelance graphic designer, Vernie became fascinated with photography. Croghan's quiet and unassuming images are inspired by simple, everyday occurrences, whether photographing expansive mountainous valleys in Italy; casted shadows on Chicago buildings; a person sitting on a park bench enjoying a cigarette break; or the simplicity of a stained lace curtain diffusing rays of light from the noon sun.

Drawing heavily from art and photographic history, Croghan creates images which have a haunting beauty of ordinary people or objects, and offer the viewer a glimpse into the lives and scenes depicted.

Colorado native, Vernie Croghan, continues to engage photography as a means to archive moments in time. Her award winning photography has been shown frequently in juried exhibitions.
